What Is a 4D/5D Ultrasound?

Understanding 4D and 5D Ultrasounds

4D and 5D/HD ultrasounds are elective prenatal imaging services that allow you to see your baby in more detail than a standard 2D ultrasound. These scans provide real-time motion, giving you a live video view of your baby inside the womb — you might even see them smile, stretch, or yawn.

Who Is This For?

4D and 5D ultrasounds are optional and not part of routine prenatal care. They’re often chosen by expecting parents who want a more personal, memorable view of their baby. Not all healthcare providers offer these scans, and insurance typically does not cover the cost.

What the Scan Shows

While 2D ultrasounds show flat, black-and-white images, 4D and 5D/HD scans provide a moving, more lifelike image. These enhanced views allow you to bond with your baby before birth by seeing their features and movements in real time.

Some providers may also use these technologies to identify certain physical conditions more clearly, such as facial abnormalities — though this is not their primary purpose.

Are These Scans Safe?

Yes. When performed by trained professionals, 2D, 4D, and 5D ultrasounds are considered safe. They use the same sound wave technology as standard ultrasounds and follow established medical guidelines.

What to Expect During the Procedure

For an abdominal ultrasound, you’ll lie comfortably while a technician applies a special gel to your belly to help transmit sound waves. A handheld device (transducer) is moved over your abdomen to capture the images or video.

After the Scan

You may receive printed photos or a short video (especially with 4D and 5D scans) to take home as keepsakes, depending on the package you choose. Your doctor will inform you if anything unusual appears — though again, these elective scans are not meant for diagnostic purposes.

Please note: Getting an ultrasound at a non-medical or commercial center is not a replacement for regular prenatal care. Always rely on licensed professionals for your medical imaging.

When the Scan Is Done

These ultrasounds are optional and typically performed during the second or third trimester.
